The Cyclades reward planning and punish improvisation. Between late May and mid September, the Meltemi turns a benign Aegean chart into something that can pin you in a harbour for three days or push you sideways through a channel at seven knots over the ground. Most skippers who get in trouble here didn't misread the wind. They misread the timing, the fetch, or the shape of the island they were trying to hide behind.
What the Meltemi actually does
The Meltemi is a dry, thermally reinforced northerly that sets up when a persistent high sits over the Balkans and a heat low deepens over Turkey and the Middle East. The pressure gradient funnels air south through the Aegean. On a synoptic chart it can look like a modest 10 to 15 knot flow. On the water, between islands, in a Venturi, it commonly delivers 25 to 35 knots for days at a time, with gusts well beyond that off headlands and down valleys.
A few things about it that matter operationally :
- It builds in the afternoon. Morning is often workable even in an active Meltemi cycle. By 13:00 to 15:00 local, the gradient wind and the thermal add up.
- It sets up in multi-day episodes. Three, five, sometimes seven days of blow, then a lull of one or two days. Plan passages in the lulls, not against the peaks.
- It's dry and clear. Unlike a mistral squall line, there is usually no cloud signature. The sky stays hard blue while it's blowing 35 knots. Do not use visual cues to gauge strength.
- Fetch is the real killer. The sea state between Andros and Tinos, or in the Mykonos-Ikaria channel, is out of proportion to the wind speed because the fetch runs the length of the Aegean.
A Meltemi at 25 knots in the open Aegean is not the same sea as 25 knots in the western Med. Short, steep, close together. Motorsailing into it wastes fuel and crew.
Choosing a direction and a season
The single most useful decision you can make is to sail the Cyclades north to south in high summer. Charter operators based in Athens or Lavrion often send boats out clockwise from Kea or Kythnos, then southeast to Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, and only turn east once they are in the lee of the southern chain. The Meltemi becomes a following wind for the eastward run through Ios, Santorini, Amorgos, and you get the northerly again on your quarter if you head back through Naxos and Paros.
The opposite direction (south to north, or east to west from the Dodecanese) is legitimate in June or in September, when the wind is less established. In July and August, planning an upwind return leg into a mature Meltemi is how one-week charters turn into three days of shelter and a taxi ride.

Reading the forecast window
You want two forecast products at minimum, and ideally three, because in the Aegean the local acceleration is bigger than the model resolution. Cross-check :
- A high-resolution regional model (Poseidon from HCMR, or a WRF-based Greek product).
- A global model (ECMWF or GFS) for the synoptic pattern three to seven days out.
- The official EMY marine bulletin, which will call the strength by sea area.
When the EMY bulletin reads 7 Beaufort, locally 8 for Central Aegean, that "locally 8" is the channel you were planning to cross. Believe it. The pattern that matters most is the moment the gradient breaks. If the models agree that the Balkan high is weakening or shifting east, you often get a 24 to 36 hour window with wind under 15 knots. That's when you move.
The mindset is closer to a Channel crossing than to Riviera day-sailing : you back-plan from a weather gate, not from a departure time. A workable ten-day route
This is not a rigid itinerary. It's a shape that survives contact with a real Meltemi cycle because every leg has a bail-out.
- Day 1 : Lavrion to Kythnos (Loutra or Fikiadha). A 25 nm southeasterly hop. Leave early. The Kavo Doro channel between Attica and Andros can accelerate viciously, so stay well south of it.
- Day 2 : Kythnos to Serifos (Livadi). Reaching leg. Livadi is well-sheltered from north but rolly from the swell that wraps around.
- Day 3 : Serifos to Sifnos (Vathi or Kamares). Short. Vathi on the west coast is one of the best all-weather holding bays in the group.
- Day 4 : Sifnos to Milos (Adamas). Adamas is a large, protected inner bay. Good place to sit out a peak day.
- Day 5 : Milos to Folegandros or Ios. The wind is now behind you. Watch for gusts off the south coast of Sikinos.
- Day 6 : Ios to Santorini or Amorgos. Santorini has no proper harbour and the caldera anchorages are deep and uncomfortable. Amorgos (Katapola) is the better cruising choice.
- Day 7 to 10 : work back northwest through Naxos, Paros, Kythnos. Naxos and Paros both have solid harbours. If the Meltemi is blowing hard, sit in Paroikia or Naousa and wait rather than pounding upwind.
Every one of those legs is under 40 nm. That is deliberate. In a Meltemi environment, short legs give you the option to leave at first light and be tied up before the afternoon build. Long legs mean you finish in the worst of it.
Anchoring and mooring when it is blowing
Most Cycladic harbours are med-moor, stern-to or bows-to, with laid lines rare and holding variable. In 30 knots of Meltemi across the harbour mouth, the margin for error is small. A few practical points :
- Scope, not weight. Aegean holding is often thin sand over rock or weed over rock. Length of chain matters more than the size of the anchor. Aim for 5:1 minimum, 7:1 if you have the room and the wind is up.
- Set hard, always. Back down at 1500 to 2000 rpm and hold it. If she drags at that load in a lull, she will drag at anchor at 03:00 in a gust.
- Watch the swing. Boats on all-chain rodes swing on a very different arc from boats on rope-and-chain. Fenders and lines out before you drop.
- The windlass earns its keep here. A stalled or slow windlass in a crosswind med-moor is a genuine problem. If yours has been neglected, deal with it before the trip. Our note on windlass maintenance covers what to check.
Coming in stern-to with 25 knots on the beam is where crews get hurt. Brief the manoeuvre out loud, put the strongest hand on the passerelle line, and agree in advance who aborts. What to prep and what to log
Boat prep for a Meltemi season is not exotic, it's just thorough :
- Two anchors ready. Bower plus a stern kedge for the tight harbours.
- Chafe protection on every mooring line. Cycladic quays are rough stone and the wind never lets the load ease.
- Reef points marked and rigged. You will use the third reef.
- Engine service current. Long lulls mean long motoring days, often at cruising rpm for six to eight hours. If you are unsure whether your engine is due, what engine hours tell you about servicing is worth reading before you leave the dock.
- Water tanks full whenever possible. Some smaller islands ration or charge heavily for water at the quay.
Log the things that will help the next skipper on the boat, or you next season : real wind at each anchorage versus forecast, holding quality, where the gusts came from, how long it took you to set. Two seasons of that log turns the Cyclades from a lottery into a routine.
The Meltemi isn't a hazard to avoid, it's a system to work with.
