On paper, the shortest hop from Cap Gris-Nez to Dover is around 21 nautical miles. In practice, a Channel crossing is one of the most demanding short passages in Europe. You are threading between two of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet, in tides that can run at 4 knots or more on springs, in a stretch of water that turns nasty when wind meets stream. It is not a passage you improvise. It is a passage you plan backwards from the tidal gate.
Why the Channel is not just a short hop
The Channel behaves like a funnel. Atlantic swell squeezes into a narrowing corridor, tides accelerate around headlands, and the seabed shelves in ways that steepen waves out of proportion to the wind on your face. Add fog that can drop to a cable's visibility in June, and a working environment where 400 metre container ships pass at 22 knots on autopilot, and you have a passage that punishes casual planning.
Three factors dominate every crossing decision, whatever your latitude of departure:
- Tide : both the height (for harbour entry, drying berths, sills) and the stream (for cross-track set and for wind-against-tide sea state).
- Weather window : true wind angle and strength, sea state, visibility, and how those change over the 6 to 12 hours you will be exposed.
- Traffic : the Dover Strait TSS, the Casquets TSS off Alderney, and the Ouessant (Ushant) TSS if you are pushing further west.
Ignore any one of these and you will pay for it. Get all three right and the crossing is genuinely enjoyable.
Tidal gates and stream planning
The Channel does not have one tide. It has a rotary system in the middle and reversing streams at the coasts, with local accelerations that matter more than the tidal atlas suggests. From a French departure port like Boulogne, Dieppe, Cherbourg or Saint-Malo, your first job is to identify the tidal gate that lets you leave and the one that lets you arrive.
A useful working method:
- Pick your target landfall (Dover, Newhaven, Poole, the Solent, Weymouth, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Falmouth).
- Work out the latest safe arrival time given daylight, harbour entry, and any bar or sill constraint.
- Back-calculate your departure so that the strongest cross-stream cancels out over the passage, or at least averages close to zero.
- Check that your departure port is navigable at that time (locks, gates, sandbars).
On a typical mid-Channel crossing you will get roughly one cycle of foul tide and one of fair. The trick is not to fight it. Aim to shape your course so the ground track is straight while the water track is a lazy S. If you find yourself pointing 30 degrees off the rhumb line just to hold track, you have mistimed the gate.
Spring tides amplify everything, including any wind-against-tide chop. If a front is forecast, a neap crossing is almost always kinder.
Reading the weather window
A Channel window is not "the wind is under 15 knots". It is a stable enough synoptic picture that your window will still be your window in eight hours. Look for:
- A pressure gradient that is not tightening while you are out.
- Wind direction that will not clock through the tide reversal and create wind-over-tide.
- Visibility trends, especially in spring and early summer when advection fog forms over cold Channel water under warm southerly air.
- Swell period and direction. A 2 metre swell at 10 seconds is comfortable, at 5 seconds it is not.
Cross-check at least two models. If a French model and a UK model disagree on the timing of a front by more than three hours, treat the window as unstable and wait. The Channel rewards patience. Traffic separation schemes: crossing the lanes
The Dover Strait TSS carries roughly 400 vessels a day. Rule 10 of COLREGs is not optional: you cross on a heading (not a course made good) as nearly as practicable at right angles to the general direction of traffic flow. That is worth restating, because plenty of skippers still get it wrong:
- Your heading is perpendicular to the lane, not your COG.
- You accept the tidal set. It will push your ground track diagonally. That is expected and legal.
- You do not tack, gybe or motor-sail zigzags inside the lane. You go across, cleanly, and you keep moving.
Practical points for the Dover Strait crossing from Calais or Boulogne:
- Monitor CROSS Gris-Nez and Dover Coastguard on VHF 16 and the working channels. CROSS may call you if your track looks wrong.
- Have AIS transmitting if you have it. In fog it is the single most useful piece of kit on board.
- Assume commercial traffic will not alter for you. Plan your gaps 6 to 8 miles ahead using CPA/TCPA, not eyeball.
- If you must slow down, slow down early. A container ship's watchkeeper reads your intentions from your consistency, not your last-minute manoeuvre.
The Casquets TSS off Alderney and the Ouessant TSS further west follow the same rules but with fewer, faster vessels and stronger tides. Around the Casquets in particular, the interaction between the Alderney Race and the TSS traffic demands very tight timing. Watchkeeping, comms, and what to log
A short crossing is still a passage. Set a proper watch system even for a day hop: two hours on, two off, with a formal handover including position, course, next waypoint, traffic picture, and any changes since the last log entry. Fatigue on a 12 hour crossing after a 5am lock-out is real.
Keep a running log. At minimum, every 30 minutes: position, COG, SOG, wind, sea, baro, engine hours if motoring, and any traffic of interest. This is not bureaucracy. It is what lets you reconstruct a decision if anything goes wrong, and what your insurer will want if it does. If you have a data logger on the NMEA network, the Oria Box will capture most of this automatically, but a written narrative of decisions still matters.
Two things every crew should have rehearsed before they cast off :
- The MOB drill, including who does what while the boat is turning. In Channel water temperatures, useful consciousness is minutes.
- The collision response sequence, because in a TSS the worst case is not theoretical.
Landfall, formalities and the return
Since Brexit, UK arrivals require a bit more paperwork than they used to. You will need to notify UK Border Force before arrival (typically via the sPCR form), check whether your marina is a designated port of entry, and have crew passports and boat papers ready. Coming back into France, you are back inside Schengen but customs may still take an interest, particularly in provisions and duty-paid items. Do not underestimate the return leg. Skippers who nail the outbound crossing often relax on the way back and get caught by a shift in the window, a tired crew, or a headwind against a spring ebb in the western approaches. Plan the return with the same rigour you gave the outbound. If it is your first Channel season, consider linking the crossing to a longer coastal cruise on either side, for instance combining an English south coast stop with a tour of Brittany on the way home, so the passage is one leg of a real trip rather than a target in itself.
Every Channel crossing you complete becomes data : the tidal set you actually got versus the one you predicted, the engine load in a 1.5 metre chop, the fuel burn against ground speed, the moment the wind clocked and you should have reefed. That debrief is where skippers get better. It is also, incidentally, where an always-on data record of the passage earns its keep, so that next season's plan starts from what the boat did, not what you remember it doing.
