Between Toulon and Calvi you have roughly 100 nautical miles of open water, most of it out of VHF range from the coast and squarely in the path of whatever the Gulf of Lion decides to throw at you. Corsica is close enough to feel routine and far enough to punish anyone who treats it that way. Whether you leave from Hyères, Saint-Tropez, Cavalaire or further east from Antibes, the passage is a real offshore hop, not a coastal cruise, and the difference between a beautiful night at sea and a very long one comes down to how you read the window before you slip lines.
The routes and the distances
There is no single "crossing to Corsica". Your departure port and destination shape everything : fuel budget, watch rota, weather exposure, even which side of the mistral you sit on. The classic options, roughly:
- Toulon or Hyères to Calvi : around 95 to 110 NM depending on your exit. The most common motor-cruiser and sailing route, and the most exposed to the mistral funnel south of the Rhône.
- Saint-Tropez or Cavalaire to Calvi or L'Île-Rousse : 90 to 105 NM. Slightly less mistral exposure at the start, but the middle of the crossing is identical.
- Antibes or Nice to Calvi : 100 to 115 NM. Shorter fetch from the northwest, more traffic near the Genoa lanes.
- Menton or Bordighera to Cap Corse : longest option, close to 120 NM, but useful if you want to enter through Macinaggio and work down the east coast.
For a displacement sailboat averaging 6 knots, plan 16 to 20 hours. For a planing motor cruiser doing 20 knots in flat water, you are looking at 5 to 6 hours, but only if the sea state actually lets you hold that speed. It rarely does. Build your plan around a realistic cruising speed at sea, not a marina number.
The weather window that actually matters
The Ligurian Sea between the mainland and Corsica has three winds that dominate the picture, and they don't cancel each other neatly.
The mistral is the obvious one. It accelerates through the Rhône valley, spills southeast across the Gulf of Lion and can be blowing 35 knots off Cap Corse while Toulon shows 10. A mistral forecast under 15 knots at the departure port means very little on its own. What you want to see is the wind field across the whole crossing, at all altitudes if you have access to it, for the full duration of your passage plus a safety margin.
The libeccio comes from the southwest and builds a nasty short sea between Corsica and the mainland. It is the wind that ruins the return leg for people who timed the outbound leg well but ignored the back half of the week.
Local thermal effects around Cap Corse and the Agriates coast can add 10 to 15 knots to whatever the synoptic forecast shows, especially in the afternoon in summer. A morning arrival at Calvi is nearly always better than a late-afternoon one.
Practical rules that hold up:
- Look for a window of at least 24 hours longer than your expected passage. If your plan is 18 hours, you want 42 clean hours of forecast.
- Cross-check at least two models. Sudden mistral onsets are notorious for showing up 6 hours earlier than one model predicted.
- Watch the pressure gradient over the Gulf of Lion, not just the wind arrows. A tightening gradient behind a front is your cue to stay in port another day.
- Summer nights are not automatically calm. Thunderstorms over the Ligurian in July and August are common and often nocturnal.

Preparing the boat
An open-water crossing exposes every weakness on board. The boat that runs coastal weekends all summer without a hiccup is not automatically ready for 100 miles offshore. Before departure, work through a proper pre-passage check :
- Fuel. Calculate consumption at cruising RPM against distance, then add a reserve of at least 30 percent for headwind, current and the possibility of running slower into a sea. - Engine and cooling. Change the raw water impeller if it is more than a season old. Check belt tension, coolant level, and the state of the sea strainer. A crossing is not the moment to discover a slow oil leak.
- Steering and autopilot. Grease the rack if applicable, check autopilot calibration, and confirm you have a genuine backup steering plan.
- Electrical. Battery capacity should cover a full night with nav lights, radar, plotter, autopilot and VHF running continuously, without draining below 50 percent.
- Safety gear. Liferaft in service, EPIRB registered and tested, harnesses and jacklines rigged before you leave the breakwater, not after the first squall.
The unglamorous truth is that most crossings that go wrong are not undone by extreme weather. They are undone by a broken belt, a clogged filter, a flat battery or a fitting that had been weeping for months. Building a preventive maintenance calendar that catches these items in port, not offshore, is one of the best investments you can make before any Corsica season.
Navigation, traffic and communications
The corridor between Provence and Corsica is one of the busiest shipping zones in the western Mediterranean. Ferries from Toulon, Nice and Marseille cross your track at 25 knots or more. Commercial traffic to and from Genoa cuts across the northern approaches. AIS is not optional here, it is fundamental.
A few things worth planning for:
- Ferry crossings. Their schedules are predictable. Overlay them on your passage plan and adjust your speed to pass astern of the ones you can. Never race a fast ferry across its bow.
- VHF discipline. Channel 16 stays on, but you should also know the working channels for CROSS La Garde and CROSS Med. Have your MMSI configured, DSC tested, and the emergency call procedure rehearsed with everyone on board. - Position reporting. Filing a passage plan with someone ashore, with expected departure, waypoints and ETA, is basic seamanship. Automated position tracking makes this easier and gives shore contacts real-time reassurance without you having to check in on VHF or phone every few hours.
- Night watches. Two-hour rotations work well for a short-handed crew. Three hours if you are three or more. The person off watch sleeps in foul weather gear with a harness clipped nearby.
Landfall and formalities
Calvi, L'Île-Rousse, Saint-Florent and Macinaggio are the usual landfall ports on the northwest coast. All of them can fill completely in July and August, and none of them will guarantee you a berth on VHF from 20 miles out. Have a plan A, a plan B, and a decent anchorage as plan C.
Approach considerations :
- Calvi : wide bay, well-lit, but the anchorage is deep (often 15 to 20 metres) and holds poorly in patches of weed. The marina is small and priority goes to booked berths in season.
- L'Île-Rousse : easy approach, ferry traffic, small marina. Anchorage north of the old town is workable in settled conditions but exposed to any northerly.
- Saint-Florent : deep bay, well protected from most directions except due north. The marina is popular and the outer pontoons take swell in libeccio conditions.
- Macinaggio : a good first port if you have come from the Riviera, well-sheltered, easy formalities, and puts you at the top of the east coast for the run south.
Once alongside, you will need to handle arrival formalities. Corsica is French territory, so paperwork is minimal for French-flagged vessels, but foreign flags and charter operators should read up in advance. What to log, and what to learn
Every crossing teaches you something about the boat, the crew and yourself, but only if you can go back and look at the data honestly. Fuel burn against sea state. Engine temperatures on long runs. How the autopilot handled the quartering sea at 0300. Where the crew got tired. Which watch pattern actually delivered rest.
The old habit of writing all this in the paper log still works. Corsica rewards patience. The window will come. The question worth asking before you leave is not "can we make it across", but "if the weather turns halfway, does the boat, the crew and the plan still hold together" ? Answer that honestly, and the crossing becomes what it should be : one of the best 100 miles you will sail all year.
