The power catamaran has moved from a curiosity on the pontoons to a real alternative for owners who used to buy trawlers or flybridge cruisers by default. Twin hulls promise more space, less roll and better fuel numbers, but they also change how you berth, how you insure and how you maintain the boat. Before you sign anything, it is worth understanding what actually changes at sea and at the dock when you swap one hull for two.

Hull behaviour at sea

A monohull leans into turns, digs a shoulder into head seas and rolls at anchor. That is not a defect, it is physics : a single displacement or semi-displacement hull uses its own weight and buoyancy asymmetry to damp motion. In a decent chop, a well-designed monohull carves through waves rather than skipping across them, and most experienced owners read that motion instinctively.

A power cat sits on two slender hulls linked by a bridge deck. The wide beam gives strong initial stability, so the boat barely heels in turns and stays remarkably flat at anchor. In beam seas, the two hulls tend to work independently, which reduces roll but introduces a shorter, more staccato pitch. Bridge deck slamming is the real limit : in steep short seas, waves hitting the underside of the bridge deck produce that characteristic thump. Modern designs raise the clearance and tune the tunnel shape to soften it, but you cannot eliminate it entirely.

Practical consequences :

  • Long crossings in swell : a monohull with a proper deep V or semi-displacement hull is usually more comfortable in long-period ocean swell.
  • Coastal cruising in choppy water : the cat is drier, flatter and less tiring for the crew, especially at anchor for lunch.
  • Following seas : cats track very straight thanks to their wide stance, monohulls can broach if pushed hard downwind.

Space, comfort and layout

This is where the catamaran wins on paper and often in reality. Beam on a 12 m power cat can reach 5.5 to 6 m, which gives you a saloon and galley layout closer to a small apartment than a boat. Cabins sit in the hulls, well separated from each other, so noise and privacy are genuinely better for two couples or a family with teenagers.

A monohull of the same length typically offers a 3.8 to 4.2 m beam. The interior volume is smaller but the layout is more familiar : a central saloon, a forward owner's cabin, one or two guest cabins. On a flybridge cruiser you get a proper upper helm and a large aft cockpit, which many owners still prefer for entertaining because everyone sits at the same level.

If your usage is weekend cruising with the same crew, and you want to feel like you are on a boat rather than in a floating loft, a monohull often feels right. Fuel, engines and running costs

The fuel argument is the most cited reason people switch to power cats, and it is partly true. Slender hulls have lower wave-making resistance at displacement speeds, so a well-designed 12 to 14 m power cat can cruise at 8 to 10 knots on two small diesels using significantly less fuel than a comparable planing monohull run at the same speed. On long passages at economy pace, savings of 25 to 40 percent are realistic depending on the model.

Two caveats :

  1. At planing speeds, the advantage shrinks or disappears. Pushing a cat past 18 to 20 knots often requires more power than owners expect, and the fuel curve rises quickly.
  2. Two engines means two of everything. Two sets of filters, two impellers, two gearboxes, two shaft seals or two sterndrives. Consumables are doubled even if each engine is smaller.

A single-engine monohull, particularly a semi-displacement trawler, remains the cheapest boat to run per nautical mile in absolute terms, but you accept slower cruising speeds and more roll. Mooring, berthing and marina reality

This is the part brochures skip. A 12 m power cat with a 5.5 m beam does not fit in a standard 12 m monohull berth in most European marinas. You will either pay a multihull surcharge (often 30 to 50 percent above the single-hull rate), be relegated to hammerhead berths, or find yourself on a waiting list. In busy summer ports on the Med, Corsica or the Balearics, calling ahead is not optional, it is mandatory.

Handling is a different story. Twin engines set far apart on a cat give you extraordinary manoeuvrability. You can pivot on the spot, walk sideways against wind and rarely need a bow thruster. A single-engine monohull demands proper technique, prop walk awareness and a good bow thruster to handle a Mediterranean stern-to mooring in a crosswind. Whichever hull you choose, the fundamentals of safety during mooring manoeuvres apply : brief the crew, prepare lines and fenders early, and never let anyone fend off with limbs. On a wide cat, the reach across the beam catches new crew off guard, and on a monohull, the roll from a passing wake at the wrong moment ends careers.

Maintenance and long-term ownership

Twin hulls mean two engine rooms, and access varies wildly between builders. On some cats the engine compartments are tight, hot and awkward to service, which pushes routine work toward the yard rather than the owner. On others, especially larger models, you can stand almost upright next to the engine. Check this before you buy, not after.

Antifouling costs are also higher on a cat. You have roughly twice the wetted surface of the equivalent monohull for the same length, plus the underside of the bridge deck to inspect. Haul-out is more expensive too, because most travel lifts are sized for monohull beams and cats often need specialist yards with wider slings.

On the other hand, cats sit level on the hard, which makes winter storage jobs much easier. Osmosis inspections, saildrive seal changes or through-hull replacements are less physical when you are not working on a heeled hull propped against stands.

Whatever the shape of the hull, the discipline is the same : follow a preventive maintenance calendar, log every job, and monitor engine hours rather than calendar dates alone. Twin engines make this more important, not less. It is easy to lose track of which engine had its impeller changed when, and a small paperwork slip becomes an expensive tow home.

Which buyer fits which boat

Strip the arguments back and the choice usually falls into three profiles.

  • The traditional cruiser : two people, occasional guests, weekend hops and one or two longer trips a year. A 10 to 13 m monohull, semi-displacement or planing, remains the reference. Familiar handling, easier berthing, better resale in most European markets.
  • The extended-stay owner : couples who live aboard weeks at a time, families with adult children, or owners who host regularly. A 12 to 15 m power cat pays back its higher purchase price in comfort, particularly at anchor.
  • The charter operator : the calculation shifts entirely. Charter guests overwhelmingly rate flat decks, wide cockpits and independent cabins highly, and a power cat delivers all three. Resale deserves a note. Power cats are still a smaller share of the used market in Europe, which means fewer buyers when you want to sell, but also less depreciation on quality builds because supply is limited. Monohulls have deeper, more liquid markets : easier to sell, more competitive pricing.

The honest conclusion

Neither hull is objectively better. A power cat is a wider, flatter, roomier platform that trades marina flexibility and some head-sea comfort for space and stability. A monohull is a narrower, more efficient shape at displacement speeds with a broader used market and familiar handling. The right answer depends on how many nights per year you sleep aboard, how far you travel from your home port and how much of your usage happens at anchor rather than underway.

Whichever you choose, the boat's real behaviour, its actual fuel burn, engine hours, roll periods and berth history, tells you far more than any brochure. That data lives on your NMEA network already. The question is whether you are capturing it, or discovering it the hard way at the next haul-out.
