Stern-to with lazy lines is the standard Mediterranean berthing drill, from Port Vendres to Bodrum. It looks easy from the pontoon and it usually is, until a cross wind picks up on the beam, the boat next door has fenders at the wrong height, and the lazy line comes up covered in weed with a bight caught under someone else's keel. The maneuver rewards preparation and a calm crew brief. Here is how to run it cleanly, single-handed or with two, on a typical 10 to 15 metre cruiser.
What a lazy line actually is
A lazy line (pendille in French, trappa in Italian) is a light messenger line tied to the top of the quay, running down and along the seabed to a heavy mooring chain or concrete block set 15 to 25 metres out. You pick it up on the quay, walk it forward along the deck, and haul until the heavy mooring line comes up out of the water. That heavy line goes on your bow cleat. Your stern lines go ashore. No anchor, no chain out, no risk of hooking a neighbour's tackle.
The good news: it is a repeatable, controlled system. The bad news: the lazy line has been sitting on the bottom for weeks or months. It will be slimy, weedy, sometimes fouled with fishing line, and occasionally led under the keel or rudder of the boat that berthed before you. Expect that and you will not be surprised.
Preparing the boat before you enter the basin
Do all the prep outside the marina, ideally hove-to or ticking over in the outer basin. Once you commit to the approach you should not be tying knots.
- Fenders: at least three per side, hung at rubbing-strake height. On a beamy cruiser you want four. Add a roving fender ready to hand at the stern.
- Stern lines: two, led from the aft quarter cleats, outboard of everything, with a large bowline pre-tied in the shore end. Flake them on the aft deck so they run clear.
- Boat hook: extended and within reach of the helm or the foredeck crew.
- Gloves: mandatory. The lazy line will shred skin.
- Passerelle: unlashed, ready to swing out, but not deployed. It will foul your stern lines if it is down early.
- Bow role: decide now who picks up the lazy line, who handles stern lines, who is on the helm. Say it out loud.
Check wind and current in the basin before you start. In most Med marinas the afternoon thermal builds a cross wind on the fairway. If it is blowing more than 15 knots on the beam, consider waiting an hour or asking the marinero for a hand on the quay. Nobody who works a marina in July will judge you for that.
The approach and reverse
Line up perpendicular to your slot, one boat-length off the quay, with the boat stopped in the water. From here you back in. Two things matter: keeping the stern tracking straight, and keeping enough steerage to correct.
Reverse in a single-screw sailboat with a right-handed prop and the stern will walk to port. Use it. Set up your approach so prop walk carries the stern towards the slot rather than away from it. On a twin-engine motor cruiser you steer on the throttles and the wheel is almost irrelevant : nudge the outboard engine to pivot, inboard engine to translate.
Keep the revs low but positive. A boat with no way on is a boat the wind owns. If you feel the bow starting to blow off, a short burst of forward on the appropriate side (or a kick ahead with helm over on a single-screw) will straighten you up. Do not let the approach turn into a series of panicky corrections. If it is going wrong, motor out, take a lap, and set up again. There is no penalty for a second attempt.
Stop the boat with the stern roughly one metre off the quay. Any closer and you risk the rudder or the bathing platform on the concrete lip, which on many Med quays sticks out below the waterline.
Picking up and securing the lazy line
The marinero, if there is one, will hand you the lazy line on the end of a pole or point at the loop on the quay bollard. Untie it from the bollard, or take it from the pole, and start walking forward along the side deck. Do not try to haul it in from the stern. You will only pull yourself into a mess of slack.
Walk it forward on the outside of everything : shrouds, stanchions, jackstays. As you reach the bow, start hauling hand over hand. The line will be light for the first several metres. Then it gets heavy, quickly, as the mooring pennant lifts off the bottom. This is the moment people get caught out : the load can be 30 or 40 kilos of wet chain, and it is coming up over the bow roller with the boat still drifting.
Get a turn on the bow cleat as soon as the heavy pennant is at the roller. Do not try to hero the whole thing onto the cleat in one lift. Take a turn, catch your breath, then finish the eye onto the cleat properly. If the pennant has a spliced eye, use it. If it is a loop of chain, put your own line through it as a strop.
Meanwhile the stern crew should be stepping ashore (or handing lines to the marinero) with the two stern lines. Cleat them off with equal tension so the boat sits square in the slot. Then, and only then, tension the bow pennant so the boat is held off the quay by about 60 to 80 cm at the stern. That gap is what saves your rudder when the swell rolls in at 0400.
What goes wrong, and how to recover
Three failure modes come up again and again.
- The lazy line is fouled under a neighbour's boat. You will feel it come up hard and stop with the pennant nowhere near the surface. Do not force it. Ease it back, motor out, and speak to the neighbour or the marinero. Trying to horse it free usually means either your bow cleat or their rudder loses.
- The lazy line parts. The messenger is often old polypropylene and it does fail. If it goes, you have no bow attachment and the wind will start pushing you sideways onto the next boat. Stern lines on, engine in slow ahead against them to hold position, then call the marinero for a replacement. Some marinas have a diver for exactly this.
- The wind takes the bow before you can secure the pennant. Short burst ahead on the engine, helm centred, to bring the bow back. If you are single-handed, this is why you should have looped the lazy line around the bow cleat with a single turn as soon as you had it in hand, even before hauling the pennant up. A turn holds. A hand does not.
Once secured, walk the boat. Check the stern lines are not chafing on the quay edge (add a chafe sleeve or a piece of fire hose). Check the pennant is not sawing across your anchor or bow roller. Check the passerelle sits above the stern lines, not on them. Adjust before you head to the harbourmaster's office, not after.
Living with stern-to in a mistral or meltemi
Stern-to is comfortable in calm weather and unpleasant in a blow from astern. If the forecast turns and you have wind pushing you onto the quay, the pennant tension is what stops your rudder from meeting concrete. Check it twice a day. On a long stay, consider doubling the bow pennant with a second line onto the mooring chain if you can reach it. A snubber or a length of nylon in the bow line adds shock absorption and saves the cleats.

Stern-to with lazy lines is 80 percent preparation and 20 percent execution. The crews that make it look effortless are the ones who briefed the maneuver on the way in, not the ones with the most horsepower or the shiniest boat.
